Access Switch
An access switch is a network device positioned at the edge of a local area network (LAN), serving as the primary connection point for end-user devices such as workstations, servers, IP phones, printers, and wireless access points. Its core function is to aggregate traffic from these endpoints and forward it to higher-level distribution or core switches within the network hierarchy.
In the context of network security, access switches are critical for enforcing security policies at the point of entry. They enable key cybersecurity measures including port security to prevent unauthorized device connections, VLAN segmentation to isolate sensitive traffic and reduce the attack surface, Quality of Service (QoS) to prioritize critical applications, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) for simplified edge device deployment. Proper configuration and management of access switches are fundamental to maintaining network integrity, controlling user access, and strengthening an organization's overall cybersecurity posture.
