We think we found the most active Waymo rider in SF. Prove us wrong - The San Francisco Standard

Who is San Francisco’s most devoted Waymo rider? After Waymo sent a Spotify-style “Year in Review” to anyone who took more than three rides in 2025—complete with playful “Waymotype” labels like power rider, night owl, and newcomer—The Standard set out to find the city’s biggest superuser.

They likely found her, though she asked to remain anonymous. Her stats are jaw-dropping:

  • 427 rides in 2025
  • More than 2,700 miles—nearly the driving distance to New York
  • Almost eight full days spent in robotaxis

Another heavy user who’s happy to go on the record: Lee Edwards, a general partner at Root Ventures and Noe Valley resident, racked up 383 rides this year—more than one per day. He says he prefers Waymo because it’s easier to work on a laptop and take calls, and he finds it safer and smoother than a human-driven Uber or Lyft. “I’ll use Muni when it’s very close point to point, but honestly, that’s pretty rare given how all over the city my meetings usually are,” said Edwards, who has taken more than 1,000 Waymo rides since the San Francisco launch. On hearing someone topped his count, he replied: “hahah damn.”

The surge in usage tracks with Waymo’s rapid Bay Area expansion. In 2025, the Alphabet-owned robotaxi began freeway operations, launched service at San Jose Mineta International Airport, and connected its coverage into a unified Bay Area service area exceeding 260 square miles (not all riders are freeway-eligible yet). Waymo now operates in five U.S. markets and crossed 1 million rides per month in March, totaling about 14 million rides in 2025—more than triple last year. The company plans to expand to 20+ cities next year, including Tokyo and London.

Competition is heating up, too. Amazon-owned Zoox is set to launch a commercial service in San Francisco, Uber plans a robotaxi partnership with Nuro and Lucid Motors, and Tesla’s robotaxi—currently with a safety driver—is expected to go fully autonomous.
